Growing up, I wasn’t the kind of kid you’d be looking for when the street lights came on outside. I was safely inside, hunkered down in my room, cuddled up with a good book. Exploring the great outdoors didn’t hold the same fascination for me that it did for my young playmates.
They relished digging in the dirt and making mud pies. To me playing in the dirt was, well… dirty. I was more fascinated by the antics of Curious George and Corduroy’s search for his missing button.
The years passed. I got married and had a child of my own. And I realized I’d become a hardcore non-explorer filled with trepidation about the world around me. Fortunately, I had someone to spark my sense of exploration and coax me to try outdoor adventures and take my first plane ride. I continue to chip away at the mountain of fears I’d allowed to engulf me. First through internal exploration, then by approaching the world with a sense of adventure, as we will here in our 3rd Quarter Explore Mid-Issue Update.
In Writings we are ushered through mysterious, life-changing doors as we explore relationships and the road to finding the courage required to take chances. In Arts we’re treated to lush images filled with a sense of wonderment. In Everything Girl we pick up where we left off in Part Two of our interview with intrepid Cover Girl Renee Felice Smith and break the ice with Man of the Moment, Ray Ford. We discover that sometimes an adventure begins with the word NO and that successful exploration must be initiated on our terms, not someone else’s.
On the All Things Girl Blog our cup runneth over. There are cozy Conversations Over Coffee with fascinating women whose indomitable spirits inspire us. The team of Habitation writers share the beauty of creating a life and home that fits our family’s unique needs – without apology. You’ll discover essays on everything from the memories of childhood to the strength we gain from amazing girlfriends. Tributes to Nora Ephron and Maeve Binchy. Interviews with veteran entertainers and up-and-coming talent.
As we dawdle on that sweet spot between summer and fall, when the world slowly begins to change around us, it’s an excellent time to pack our “bags” and do some exploring. We hope you’ll begin your exploration here on the pages of All Things Girl. Then once you are filled with a renewed sense of creativity and adventure, we encourage you to go therefore and explore. But don’t forget to take along your journal and a camera to document your next great adventure. We’d love to hear about it. Share the magic you experience by submitting your story, photograph, or essay here.
