Another Love Note from the Garden by Connie Cottingham

Oh, my dear, do not go our into that burning July sun without me. I am here to protect you – and to make you look stunning. Everybody needs a hat that looks good and protects them. Those laugh lines near your eyes – I must say you wear them well. They make you look fun and interesting. But you have just enough – you don’t need any more. So toss me onto your head every time you go outside. Don’t forget the sunscreen on the way out the door too – and the lotions later. You deserve to be treated special – so do it!

Love, Your Garden Hat

ABOUT LOVE NOTES I wanted to create a way to bring the garden into people’s minds with a weekly email, but not with a to-do list that just adds to the overwhelm of a busy life. A garden does take maintenance and care, but gives so much back to its caregiver. ‘Love Notes from the Garden’ help to guide and inspire with gentle nudges and a bit of humor, reminding people that the garden responds when you care, that each plant has a personality, that your garden is a habitat filled with change and wonder.

Hi, I’m Connie, and I have been gardening for decades. I am a landscape architect, a lifetime master gardener, a garden writer, a garden club member and spend almost every day in a botanical garden. I am here to hold the hand of an uncertain gardener and tell them how to nurture their space and themselves, how gardening can bring joy and lessons, and how travel to other gardens can also bring joy and lessons. And I want them to understand the many ways a garden can give back to its caregiver. A columnist for Georgia Gardening and Southern Distinction magazines, I have been published in Conifer Quarterly, History, Lee, Museum Store, Country Journal, GEORGIA, Columbia County, Georgia Family and New South Gardener magazines and have written many newspaper garden columns.

Thanks for this reminder, Connie. Sun protection is important anytime, but especially during the intense summer most of us have been enduring. This advice would also be well heeded during any outdoor activity.

I also love these bite-sized reminders that fit neatly into our busy weeks.

Connie, this was a great love-note. Not only is it a wonderful reminder to wear a hat (my sunburned scalp could have used this nudge a couple of weeks ago), it’s brought back childhood memories of my grandmother saying, “Put a hat on that baby!”

My childhood hat was a red calico thing not unlike the Sun-Maid raisin girl’s. Now? I have collections of hats in every shape and style, so there’s really never a good excuse to be bare-headed.
