Bittersweet Young Love by Alexandria Probst

I was headed to Grandpa’s where I would be spending my hot days ofsummer helping him keep up with the farm and house work. I wasn’t excited about going there this summer because I just turned sixteen and got my license. I would much rather be spending the summer days with my friends riding around town in my car but momma would never let that happen.

As I had pulled onto the dirt road to Grandpas’ I saw an old red pick-up truck I didn’t recognize. Grandpa must have seen me coming down the drive because he met me out front with open arms, as usual. After giving Grandpa a hug a boy came out of the front door. He probably thought I was weird because I stared a little too much. His hair was dirty blonde with hazel eyes and his smile was perfection. He had a little muscle but not too much, most likely from working and his name was John. Grandpa introduced him and told me that he would also be spending the summer helping on the farm until he left for the army. I wasn’t happy about having to be here at first, but now that I had a little eye candy to look at I’m okay with it.

John and I spent the summer doing Grandpa’s dirty work during the day. We spent the day talking and getting to know each other. We would joke around with each other and play games. After a long day of work we would sometimes head down to the swimming hole where we began to grow fond of each other.

One evening in particular, we had gone to the swimming hole and we were doing the usual flirting, splashing water at each other’s faces and swinging off the rope. After John had jumped off the rope he came up and ducked my head under the water, once he finally let me up for air I laughed and called him a jerk and splashed water in his face. We started to stare at each other and he grabbed my head gently and gave me a soft kiss on the lips. I had never really been kissed like that before and I felt a tingling sensation all over my body.

Summer was coming to an end and John and I had been spending more and more time together in the evening. Grandpa didn’t seem to mind either, he actually seemed happy for me. It was our last night at Grandpa’s and we decided to go to the swimming hole as usual. John and I were hugging and kissing, when we didn’t stop kissing. John grabbed a hold of me and carried me to our towels and laid me down. He began kissing and touching and the tingling sensation I had the first time he kissed me happened again. John and I shared in something I never thought we would and I couldn’t help but think of how this was bittersweet.

Morning came and it was time for John to head home before leaving for the army. We said our goodbyes and as he was about to leave he said “I love you” and gave me a kiss on my forehead. The pain came rushing into my chest and I collapsed to the dirt filled road with a single tear falling down my cheek. I stared down the path his old truck was headed, wondering if I will ever see him again.
